Helen McGhie

Photography | Creative Research

ABOUT

I am a photographer, practice-based researcher and Senior Lecturer at the School of Digital Arts, Manchester Metropolitan University. My work explores the still, moving and sometimes sonic image in often non-art contexts, to engage audiences in unexpected ways.

Through my work, photography becomes a relational practice, fostering encounters between people, partners and communities, as foregrounded through my practice-based PhD in partnership with Kielder Observatory Astronomical Observatory (Northumberland, UK), completed in 2024 (download thesis). I am currently working in partnership with urban gardeners at Incredible Edible Salford, a community gardening project.
